This year,
fifth and sixth graders at Bennett School trained to
run the Cairo Levee Footrace as a pilot project,
promoting exercise and nutrition.
Called “CHESI Champions”, these students ran three nights each week for five weeks, gradually increasing the distance. They were also given a healthy snack, like apples, oranges and granola bars.
On race day, the CHESI Champions all ran in the 5K race, and several won or placed in their age groups.
The project, designed by Community Health & Emergency Services, Inc. (CHESI) staff, included Bennett schools’ principal and teachers, missionaries from “Two Rivers”, and CHESI staff, all of whom volunteered their time to work with the participants.
The project was sponsored by the law office of Johnson & Schneider (Cairo), Capaha Bank, the AFL-CIO Local 773, Southern Illinois Healthcare (Carbondale), and First Southern Bank (Carbondale).
Efforts are being made to expand the program next year, to include more students and to include other area schools.
